Pine Island Garden Club is getting ready to celebrate its 11th year anniversary of their Annual Garden Gala to be held on February 18th from 9-2. Over the past years this event has grown to be one of the best events on Pine Island and is enjoyed by people from all over.
Nearly 30 years ago, the Garden Club cleared a small piece of Lee County
property at the center of Pine Island and started the Garden Club Park.
It didn’t have much in it at first, but over the years has grown into a
beautiful nature conservancy with several different gardens full of
native and tropical plants and mature trees. Lee County added some
picnic tables and, with the constant monthly nurturing of the Pine Island
Garden Club, the park is now a respite for nature lovers, visitors, and
home to the annual Garden Gala.
Eleven years ago with fellow Club members Susie Quattro, Margie Vander Kruik and Dottie Kernaghan sat down to brainstorm ways for the
Garden Club to make money to pay for park improvements as well as
provide funds for our Pine Island community needs. It was decided to
showcase the park and have a real “old-town” style nature festival with
local nurseries and arts and crafts. It was so small at first that the music
came from a boom box stuck up in a tree! But it was so very successful
that here we are 11 years later with a huge event that everyone looks
forward to the whole year. We couldn’t be more proud to offer this free
celebration of nature to the people of Pine Island and the surrounding
cities. It’s a lovely opportunity to buy low-cost plants and herbs, shop
for art and gifts, taste scrumptious food and baked goods, meet local
organizations, and learn all about gardening from experts. Wow—we’re
proud of the only free event in town--the Gala.
The 2011 Pine Island
Garden Gala was a great success due to the hard work
of Co-Chairs
Kathleen Hecksher & Barb Peckinpaugh
and all of the members and volunteers.
Here are some fun photos from the event.
